Solving a murder from a window

I was never interested in watching older movies. I wrongfully thought they were boring and hard to watch. This will sound awful but at the beginning of Rear Window I was falling asleep, I thought the movie was taking a long time for anything to happen. Living in a time where action in movies is so common, it is hard to appreciate a gem like Rear Window. I was amazed by the camera's contribution to the movie. The movie started with the camera moving through the window of the main character, Jeff, and moving through out the apartment context. It gave us an idea of what Jeff sees everyday as he is confined to his room due to his broken leg. The movement of the camera was innovated for its time. It had a huge contribution to the overall success of the movie. I also thought keeping the camera in the home of Jeff to be a great choice by the directors of the movie.

My favorite scenes had to be at the end of the movie. One of them was when Lisa was caught in Thorwald's apartment. As an audience we knew as much as Jeff did. We did not know whether Thorwald would harm Lisa or if help would come to the rescue. The viewers felt a sense of fear and anxiety for the safety of Lisa. She is a very liked character in the movie and no one wanted to see her harmed. When we see the cops running through the hallway and knocking on the door, we get a sense of relief. Additionally, when Lisa points at the ring, sending a message to Jeff. The camera zooms in on Thorwald showing that he knows where Jeff is. It was critical in preparing the viewers for what will happen next. Another scene I really enjoyed was when Thorwald was in Jeff's apartment and walking towards him as Jeff was flashing the flashlight. The color effects made the scene what it is. It appears cheesy to the modern viewer, however, when the movie was released I believe this scene amazed many viewers.

There are so many scenes in the movie other than those mentioned that other people might view as a favorite. Can't wait to hear what my readers liked about the movie and what their favorite scenes were!

  1. I definitely can relate to you because Rear Window did have such a slow build to it, it was hard for me to get through the beginning as well. I think that Lisa getting caught in Thorwald's apartment was one of my favorite scenes as well from the film. Overall, even though it was a slow build, I thought it was a good film.
