The Social Dilemma is truly a remarkable documentary. It shines a light on how manufacturers benefit from the negative emotions and thoughts that social media creates. The creators of the film put a creepy twist on the social media industry. The scene with the different tabs filling the screen representing on the individuals that are on social media and controlled really shows how many people are being controlled. It is terrifying. When you are on instagram, tik tok, snapchat you don't think about the people behind the app but the people behind the comments and the likes.
There are so many steps that are taken in order to cause addiction in teenagers. The feeds on these applications are altered in a way that promote more scrolling or swiping. By adding suggested posts and messing with the timeline of these posts it all affects how much a person swipes. Additionally, seeing first hand how comments affect people behind the screen was emotional.
This documentary is not the only source of concern for social media. A TEDTalk also sheds light on the dangers of social media on mental health.
Tristan Harris is the protagonist of The Social Dilemma. He is a president of an organization that continues to share concerns about the negative impacts of social media on all different groups of people. The addictive aspects of technology is continually a growing concern. The actions taken to make the public aware is important, and the making of documentaries like this is crucial.
